Stroke Development Programme – Master All Four Strokes at Jump!
When children have mastered independent swimming, the next chapter begins: learning to swim with proper technique and genuine endurance. This is Stroke Development — where confident swimmers become truly capable swimmers. Children learn correct form for all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly), build the endurance for longer distances, and develop capabilities that will serve them for life — whether their ambitions are recreational, competitive, or simply to be a strong, safe swimmer.

Stroke Development Programme Levels
Three advanced levels take children from stroke refinement through to mastery of all four competitive techniques. Progression is skills-based — children advance when they’ve genuinely mastered each stage.
Frog (Skills-Based, Advanced)
Frog is where technique really begins. Children learn bilateral breathing — breathing on both sides, which is essential for proper freestyle — refine their freestyle stroke, and master backstroke. By the end of Frog, children show recognisably proper swimming technique. This level is for confident independent swimmers (typically Octopus graduates) ready to focus on technique refinement.
Key skills: bilateral breathing, freestyle stroke refinement (correct arm recovery, body rotation, kick coordination), backstroke technique development, endurance building, applying technical feedback.
Class size: 4 children, 45 minutes per session.
Stingray (Skills-Based, Advanced)
Stingray is where children expand their repertoire. They build on freestyle and backstroke mastery, introduce breaststroke kick, and for the first time swim the full length of the pool — a major milestone. This is the level for very confident swimmers with strong freestyle and backstroke ready for multi-stroke introduction.
Key skills: freestyle refinement (15+ metres unassisted), backstroke mastery (15+ metres unassisted), breaststroke kick introduction with proper frog-kick technique, full pool length swimming for the first time, endurance for longer distances.
Class size: 5 children, 45–50 minutes per session.
Marlin (Skills-Based, Advanced)
Marlin is our highest level. Children master all four strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly — build significant endurance, and develop the capabilities of genuinely accomplished swimmers. By the end of Marlin, children are ready for pre-squad, competitive swimming, or simply a lifetime of confident, capable swimming. The choice is theirs.
Key skills: all four strokes mastered with proper technique, significant endurance across full pool lengths, butterfly stroke (the most advanced and technical stroke), competitive-level fitness, readiness for pre-squad or recreational advanced swimming.
Class size: 5 children, 45–50 minutes per session.
The Four Strokes: What Children Learn at Each
Freestyle (Front Crawl) — Introduced in Frog, Mastered in Stingray
Backstroke — Introduced in Frog, Mastered in Stingray
Breaststroke — Kick in Stingray, Full Stroke in Marlin
Butterfly — Introduced and Developed in Marlin
Is Your Child Ready for Stroke Development?
Children are ready for Stroke Development when they:

✓ Can float comfortably on back and front
✓ Have basic freestyle and backstroke skills
✓ Can listen to instruction and apply feedback
✓ Are ready to focus on technique, not just play
✓ Are motivated by learning and improvement
Not sure if your child is ready? Talk to your Independent Swimmers instructor — they can assess whether Stroke Development is the right next step for your child right now.
