Helping children build confidence, learn essential skills and stay safe in and around water.
Water Safety Starts Early
Water Safety Starts Early
Water safety is one of the most important life skills a child can develop. At JUMP! Swim Schools, we are dedicated to creating the perfect learning environment for every child. We create a nurturing and safe learning environment where every child feels supported to build water confidence and skills for life. Through small classes, fewer distractions, qualified instructors and teaching grounded in love and care, we provide a safe, caring and personal experience where children can build confidence, develop swimming and water safety skills and progress as individuals. Water safety learning extends beyond swimming lessons. Through play-based activities, practical resources, community programs and parent education, we help children and families develop knowledge, understanding and skills that can support safer participation in pools, at beaches, around inland waterways and at home.

Why Child Water Safety Matters
Why Child Water Safety Matters
Every year, Australian families are reminded of the importance of water safety education. Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Children need opportunities to recognise hazards, understand why safer behaviours matter, develop practical skills and know how to seek help.
The 2025 National Drowning Report recorded drowning deaths across coastal locations, inland waterways and swimming pools. This reinforces the importance of helping children understand that different aquatic environments present different and changing risks.
Swimming lessons are one important layer of water safety, but they never replace active adult supervision, restricted access to water or emergency preparedness.
Building Knowledge, Understanding and Practical Skills
Effective water safety education is about more than remembering rules. Children need opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding, skills and abilities, and attitudes and behaviours that support safer participation in, on and around water.

Frequently Asked Questions About Child Water Safety
Families and educators can access activity sheets, parent checklists, educational resources and the interactive water safety quiz through this page and the Parent Water Safety Portal.
Children should stop, look for hazards, ask and wait for permission from a supervising adult, follow safety rules and only swim in appropriate supervised areas.
Yes. JUMP! provides educational activities, water safety awareness initiatives, school and early learning visits, and parent resources designed to reinforce learning beyond the pool.
Regular weekly lessons provide consistency and help children build and maintain swimming and water safety skills over time. Children progress when skills are demonstrated consistently, based on their individual development.
Yes. Swimming ability never replaces active adult supervision. Young children should remain within arm’s reach of a supervising adult whenever they are in or around water.
Talk about water safety rules, ask children to spot and explain hazards, compare different aquatic environments, practise calling for help and complete age-appropriate activities together.
Children can develop safe entries and exits, floating, safe breathing skills, movement through the water, returning to a safe point, recognising hazards, following safety rules and calling for help.
Swimming lessons help children develop important swimming and water safety skills, but no child is ever completely drown-proof. Active adult supervision, restricted access to water and knowing how to respond in an emergency remain essential.
Children can begin JUMP!’s age-appropriate learn-to-swim programs from six months. Selected locations may also offer Baby Water Play for younger babies. Contact your local JUMP! Swim School to discuss the most appropriate starting point for your child.
Water safety education helps children develop knowledge and understanding, practical skills and safer behaviours. Learning begins early and should continue as children grow, become more independent and encounter new aquatic environments.
