Summer in Australia is synonymous with sunny days, time spent by the water, and joyful family memories. While enjoying the water is a beloved part of the Australian lifestyle, safety should always come first. Learning to swim is more than just an extra-curricular activity – it’s a crucial life skill that helps build confidence and ensure safety in and around water.

Why Water Safety Matters

Drowning remains a significant concern, with a 16% rise in incidents over the past 10 years (Royal Life Saving Society – Australia, 2024). However, with the right practices in place, we can help reduce the risks.

Here are our tips for having a safe and happy summer by the water.

Staying Safe This Summer

  • Choose Bright Swimwear: Dress children in brightly coloured swimwear to make them easily visible in pools or at the beach. This small step can help adults keep track of them during busy water activities.
  • Supervise Actively: Always stay within arm’s reach of young children near water. Remember, drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds. Designate an adult as a dedicated water watcher to supervise children distraction-free.
  • Secure Pool Areas: Ensure pool gates are locked and in good working condition. A secure and compliant pool fence is a critical safety measure to prevent accidents when the pool is not in use.
  • Learn Basic Life-Saving Skills: Taking a CPR course is a valuable investment for families. Being equipped to respond in an emergency can save lives, offering peace of mind during water play.
  • Be Weather Aware: Australian summers can bring unpredictable weather. If storms or high winds approach, move activities indoors to avoid the risks associated with water and electricity or strong currents.
  • Establish Clear Water Safety Rules: Setting simple but clear safety rules for children can help them understand how to behave around water. Rules might include no running near the pool, always swimming with an adult, and avoiding dangerous games like prolonged breath-holding.
  • Use the Buddy System: Encourage children to swim with a buddy whenever possible. This adds a layer of safety and ensures they’re never alone in the water.
