Stroke Development Programme – Master All Four Strokes at Jump!

When children have mastered independent swimming, the next chapter begins: learning to swim with proper technique and genuine endurance. This is Stroke Development — where confident swimmers become truly capable swimmers. Children learn correct form for all four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly), build the endurance for longer distances, and develop capabilities that will serve them for life — whether their ambitions are recreational, competitive, or simply to be a strong, safe swimmer.

Why Proper Stroke Technique Matters for Your Child

Injury Prevention Through Proper Form

Correct technique protects developing joints and muscles from unnecessary strain. Poor form — especially common in freestyle and backstroke — can lead to shoulder problems over time. Getting technique right early prevents issues later.

Efficiency & Faster Progression

Proper technique means less energy wasted. Children can swim longer distances, faster, with less fatigue. They’ll see dramatic improvement week to week as efficiency improves.

Building Genuine Endurance

Technical efficiency allows children to build real stamina. By the time they complete Stroke Development, they’re swimming full pool lengths with proper form — a significant achievement.

Confidence That Comes From Mastery

There’s a meaningful difference between being comfortable in water and being a truly capable swimmer. Mastering strokes builds a different level of confidence — one that’s earned through achievement.

Foundation for Competitive Swimming (If They Choose It)

Many children discover an interest in competitive swimming through Stroke Development. Proper technique learned early makes any transition to squad or competitive swimming significantly smoother.

Lifelong Skill

Proper technique becomes second nature. Your child will be a confident, capable swimmer for life — whether for recreation, fitness, competition, or simply enjoying Australia’s pools and beaches.

Stroke Development Programme Levels

Three advanced levels take children from stroke refinement through to mastery of all four competitive techniques. Progression is skills-based — children advance when they’ve genuinely mastered each stage.

Frog (Skills-Based, Advanced)

Frog is where technique really begins. Children learn bilateral breathing — breathing on both sides, which is essential for proper freestyle — refine their freestyle stroke, and master backstroke. By the end of Frog, children show recognisably proper swimming technique. This level is for confident independent swimmers (typically Octopus graduates) ready to focus on technique refinement.

Key skills: bilateral breathing, freestyle stroke refinement (correct arm recovery, body rotation, kick coordination), backstroke technique development, endurance building, applying technical feedback.

Class size: 4 children, 45 minutes per session.

Stingray (Skills-Based, Advanced)

Stingray is where children expand their repertoire. They build on freestyle and backstroke mastery, introduce breaststroke kick, and for the first time swim the full length of the pool — a major milestone. This is the level for very confident swimmers with strong freestyle and backstroke ready for multi-stroke introduction.

Key skills: freestyle refinement (15+ metres unassisted), backstroke mastery (15+ metres unassisted), breaststroke kick introduction with proper frog-kick technique, full pool length swimming for the first time, endurance for longer distances.

Class size: 5 children, 45–50 minutes per session.

Marlin (Skills-Based, Advanced)

Marlin is our highest level. Children master all four strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly — build significant endurance, and develop the capabilities of genuinely accomplished swimmers. By the end of Marlin, children are ready for pre-squad, competitive swimming, or simply a lifetime of confident, capable swimming. The choice is theirs.

Key skills: all four strokes mastered with proper technique, significant endurance across full pool lengths, butterfly stroke (the most advanced and technical stroke), competitive-level fitness, readiness for pre-squad or recreational advanced swimming.

Class size: 5 children, 45–50 minutes per session.

The Four Strokes: What Children Learn at Each

Freestyle (Front Crawl) — Introduced in Frog, Mastered in Stingray

Children learn proper arm technique (high elbow recovery), efficient leg kick, body rotation, and breathing rhythm. The key achievement is bilateral breathing — breathing on both sides — which is the foundation of efficient, sustainable freestyle.

Backstroke — Introduced in Frog, Mastered in Stingray

Children learn inverted body position, proper arm rotation, kicking whilst on back, and head positioning. Unlike other strokes, backstroke doesn’t require turning the head to breathe — a unique skill that teaches different body awareness.

Breaststroke — Kick in Stingray, Full Stroke in Marlin

The only stroke where both arms and both legs move simultaneously. Children learn whip-kick technique, breath timing, and the undulating body motion that makes breaststroke unique. Timing is everything — and it’s satisfying to master.

Butterfly — Introduced and Developed in Marlin

The most demanding and technically challenging stroke. Children learn dolphin kick (both legs together), simultaneous arm movements, body undulation, and breath coordination. Swimming butterfly full length is one of swimming’s great achievements — and our Marlin swimmers get there.

Is Your Child Ready for Stroke Development?

Children are ready for Stroke Development when they:

✓ Are confident independent swimmers, comfortable in water without parent
✓ Can float comfortably on back and front
✓ Have basic freestyle and backstroke skills
✓ Can listen to instruction and apply feedback
✓ Are ready to focus on technique, not just play
✓ Are motivated by learning and improvement

Not sure if your child is ready? Talk to your Independent Swimmers instructor — they can assess whether Stroke Development is the right next step for your child right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Freestyle and backstroke are introduced in Frog level. Breaststroke kick starts in Stingray, with the full stroke developed in Marlin. All four strokes — including butterfly — are mastered at Marlin level.
Frog focuses on bilateral breathing and refining freestyle and backstroke technique. Stingray introduces breaststroke kick and full pool length swimming for the first time. Marlin adds butterfly and develops competitive-level capability across all four strokes.
Typically 8–12 weeks per level, similar to Independent Swimmers. Some children advance faster; others spend longer at a level. We don’t rush — technique mastery matters more than speed of progression.
Marlin prepares children well for pre-squad and competitive swimming, but whether they pursue competition is entirely their choice. Some children transition to competitive swimming; others enjoy being genuinely capable recreational swimmers. Either is a great outcome.
No — it’s advanced recreational swimming with a strong technique focus. Competitive swimming (squad or club) comes after, if your child chooses. Stroke Development is for any child who wants to become a truly capable swimmer.
8–12 weeks per level on average. Children who progress faster may spend 6 weeks at a level; others take 16 weeks. We focus on genuine skill mastery rather than moving children through on a fixed schedule.
Our instructors provide individual feedback during classes, identifying specific technique issues and coaching corrections in real time. At some locations we also use video feedback, which children find highly motivating — there’s nothing quite like seeing yourself improve.
Swim wear, a towel, and a change of clothes. Goggles are optional but many children find them helpful for freestyle and seeing underwater. We provide all equipment — kickboards, fins, and any other teaching aids used in class.
Weekly lessons allow steady, consistent progress. Twice weekly accelerates development significantly. Less than weekly slows progress considerably — consistency is the single most important factor in stroke mastery.
After Marlin, children are ready for pre-squad swimming at competitive facilities, advanced recreational swimming, fitness-focused swimming, or simply enjoying being accomplished swimmers for life. Our instructors can advise on specific next steps based on your child’s goals and interests.
